A Day at the Shipyard

NTCL owns and operates one of the most impressive inland shipyards in Canada. A large shipyard facility is required to repair and maintain NTCL's massive fleet of tugs and barges. In Hay River, the Syncrolift and rail transfer system lift and launch equipment.

A highly skilled maintenance crew repair and maintain tugs and barges both in the shipyard and inside the Syncro repair facility which is capable of handling any size river or coastal vessel or barge.

NTCL's tugs and barges are its lifeline and, therefore, the maintenance and modernization of its fleet are of paramount importance. In compliance with ship safety regulations and self-imposed standards of quality, NTCL adheres to a rigorous and comprehensive repair and maintenance schedule for all of its marine equipment. Mechanical and electronic components are constantly upgraded and replaced to ensure that only the most modern and effective equipment is at the hands of the ships' crews.

A variety of industrial and mechanical services are available at NTCL's shipyard facility:

  • Marine maintenance, repair and shipbuilding, in the shipyard and in the bays which are equipped with 4 - 20 ton overhead cranes
  • Steel fabrication - CWB certified for steel and aluminum, UT services
  • Sandblasting and painting
  • Portable high pressure water blasting to 10,000 psi
  • Engine and pump repair and overhaul
  • Machining - lathes, milling and line boring
  • Electronics and electrical services - dealers, sales and service
  • Industrial supplies
  • Tank cleaning, steam cleaning and oil spill containment and clean-up
