Northern Transportation Company Limited is Northern Canada's oldest Arctic marine operator, and among Canada's largest barging companies. For 75 years, we have provided reliable and critical marine transportation services to communities and resource exploration projects along the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories and across the Western Arctic, from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska as far east as Taloyoak in Nunavut, and from the Port of Churchill to communities in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut on the west coast of Hudson Bay.
NTCL's core business is marine cargo transportation. In five short months every year - from June to October - we have moved millions of tons of cargo in our seven and a half decades serving Northerners, and are as much a fixture of Northern summer life as 24-hour sunshine.
In 2009, NTCL is offering a new marine service from Richmond, BC, meaning that, along with our service from Halifax, NS and our Mackenzie River route from Hay River, we can now offer cargo delivery service from Coast to Coast to Coast.
Cargo destined for the Western Arctic and Kitikmeot regions can be loaded onto a 12000-ton ocean capable barge at Richmond and towed by an Arctic Class II supply ship north along the West Coast, east along the north coast of Alaska and into Canadian Arctic waters.
Cargo destined for Mackenzie River and Mackenzie Delta communities moves along our traditional tug and barge route from Hay River, home to our 25-hectare loading terminal, large shipyard, Syncro-lift and fleet maintenance facility.
We reach our customers in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut from the Ports of Churchill, MB, Becancourt, PQ and Halifax, NS delivering dry cargo to the communities of Arviat, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bay and Sanikiluaq.
The people of the Arctic, the Inuvialuit and the Inuit, are our customers, our owners, and after decades of delivering their sealift cargo, and our longstanding friends. Since 1985, NTCL has been a 100% aboriginal-owned company, and is the founding member of the NorTerra Inc. group of companies. NorTerra is owned by the Inuvialuit Development Corporation of the Western Arctic on behalf of the Inuvialuit of the Western Arctic and Nunasi Corporation, on behalf of the Inuit of Nunavut.
